Ethics Question

I placed an order with a crafter before Christmas - Dec 14th. I told her no big hurry, didn't have to have it for Christmas, but would like it by the end of the year.
I thought I would be polite, and instead of 'goods' I payed under the category 'gift' using pay pal.

Jan, 9th, I still hadn't received it, and I emailed her, she said it was finished and would be in the mail that week.

Jan 26th, still haven't received it (she is in the same state, it should have took no more than 2 days) I emailed her and asked for my money back, I can't dispute it on PayPal, because it wasn't a delivered good. She said, no problem - still haven't received the payment.

So - now - Do I post on her facebook page, incase she does this to everyone to let them know it can take a while? Prolly not. No matter what I would try to do, I would come across as an asshole. Do I leave it alone and just eat it? My only choice? Surely not.

What would you do?

My brother and his wife bought a new house, and they are downsizing. In this downsizing, Lonnie went thru all of her old jewelry, and sent me this awesome 'mess' to play with!

There is so much fun in this bundle. Mebbe the spark I need to get out of this creative slump.

As I dug thru it, I found these:

OMG!!! Hello 80's!!!! I remember having my head shaved on one side, huge shoulder pads and these earrings. The bigger the better. The ones on the right were bought, and yes are vintage, the ones one the left my brother made. My brother made the coolest earring and brooches back in the 80's. I think he may have been my original inspiration for making jewelry.

I don't have the heart to take these apart, in fact, I am going to fix the one pair, and start wearing them again.

Maybe I should make a few pairs :)

Wow - the holidays were crazy, what bout you?

I told myself after my big blowout sale, I was going to take 2 weeks off.....welp - here we are over a month later and I am still taking time off.

I may have reached burn out, or reality may have sunk in. I have been chasing a business and a dream for 6 years now, and still am not in the black. So I have taken this time to do a lot of thinking.

It is gut wrenching to put so much effort, research and hope into your passion to create a business and it not pan out. Jealousy has reared its ugly head a few times, when I see the success of others, and it shames me to admit it.

Instead of trying to run myself into the ground, I am scaling way back and becoming the hobbyist. Instead of running to a festival every weekend, keeping a huge inventory in stock, I will be supplying my stores, doing an occasional festival, and have added classes. I have several classes scheduled, and surprisingly, not all jewelry. I do a lot of different crafts, and have for years. I am not an expert in the craft, but I do know enuff about it to teach a novice and answer their questions. These classes have turned out to be a very steady and predictable income, without the overhead of booth fee and gas. Win-win.

Let's see where this chapter takes us :)

Potato chip cookies

My favorite part of Christmas is making cookies to give out to family and friends. I always have my traditional standbys, and then I love to find the odd little gems likes these.

I wanted to share them with you!!!

These are a fun variation of a butter cookie. Salty and sweet, dense and flaky.

1 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 c. crushed potato chips

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Mix in flour and chips. Dough will be really sticky. Turn out onto a heavily floured surface and kneed in about 1/2 cup more flour. Carefully roll it out (it is tuff to work with) and cut into 2" circles. I used a small glass. Put on ungreased cookie sheet - 350 degrees for 13 minutes.

Let cool completely. Leave them as they are or make sandwich cookies out of them with a chocolate filling!

Chocolate Ganache
2 c. whipping cream
1 - 12 oz pkg semi sweet choc. chips

Bring the whipping cream to a simmer in a heavy sauce pan. Stir a lot so it won't scorch When it is simmering add the bag of choc chips. Stir til the chips have melted and continue to stir for about 4 more minutes.

Let the ganache COMPLETELY cool. It can take several hours. I make mine the nite before and keep it in a covered container in the ice box til I need to use it.

Finding Inspiration - New Sweater

In a bit of a creative rut lately, just not finding any inspiration.
The other day I stopped by the thrift store, looking for a new sweater (cool weather is here and I am completely unprepared)

I found this little beauty. Nice cotton, heavy, and BRIGHT! Perfect way to combat the fall doldrums.

One morning before work, I was looking at my sweater, and I wanted a new necklace. I love the colors in this, it would work great for a necklace. So I came up with this. I added the blue in there for the blue jeans I was wearing :)

It goes perfect!

Well my friend Jana of BeJeweled by Jana sure has a gift. She has a great zest for life, a fun heart and creates beautiful crocheted items.

I love when she feels spunky and makes cute things like this! It goes great with my Snow White sunglasses :)

Going Earring Crazy!!!

I can't stop making earrings! Earrings are my least favorite thing to make, yet lately I have been so inspired to make them.

I am all about long and stacked earrings right now. Good thing I guess, I have a show tomorrow.

I love the warmth of the color of this mahogany onyx with the copper.

I have seen earrings where these freshwater pearls are stacked, but I didn't have enuff that matched so I just stopped with one

Gifts for a Wedding

My nephew got married at the beginning of the month. It was fun to have all of my husbands side of the family together.

To celebrate, I made a set for the grooms mother, my sister in law. She is one of my favorite people in the world. I love to make jewelry for her.

Multi layer necklace - black, pink and green with tiny copper disks hanging randomly to give it more movement. I took the picture on my work table, so I blurred out all the mess, looks like brush strokes from a master painter - yeah right :)

Pearl Cuff - Work in Progress

What is my project this week? I am working a shell pearl cuff.

I had placed an order back in August to Firemountain Gems. While shopping for items for a custom piece, I ran across a Shell Pearl Mix. I am a sucker for mixes. I do love this mix. There is no color order, so I am not working with a fall palette, or a warm palette. The types of shell pearls are also random - pastels and bold colors, shiney and matte finishes. It is like a big scoop of pearl pleasure!

I let the beads fall out of the package in a random order and wire wrapped them into a copper wire frame. Then added seed beads for accent.

There are still holes in the design that will be filled with more copper wire, beads and crystals.

Confessions of a Hoarder - Scrapbooking Supplies

So remember the Groupon I got? $25.00 for $100.00 worth of scrapbooking stuffs from Websterspages?

It came!!!

There really is a lot of stuff in here. I am not a scrapbooker, so I don't know the value of these items, but I did think it was very generous.

1. 2 pages of stickers and 25 8x8 card stock pages - some are transparent, some have scalloped edges - I can use this in resin cups.
2. 5 pages of flowery thingies - I can make combs out of them
3. Little cardboard button punch out thingies!
4. Smaller scale of the 8x8 card stock and such
5. RIBBONS!!!!
See those circles mixed in with the flowers - I got big plans for those babies :)
Up above the ribbons are post cards, and boarder stickers.

So much fun stuff! I'll be sharing part of this later down the road - just think, you got a sneak peak at my next give away :)

Bracelet Inspiration - Mom's Charm Bracelet

Growin' up one of my fond memories was of my mom's charm bracelet. I remember laying in her lap at church and busying myself looking at each of the charms, remembering where they came from, and making up stories about them. She wore it every time she stepped out the door.

I remember we would go on vacation or for christmas gifts she would get a new charm to mark the occasion. She would have to take the bracelet to a jeweler to have them attach the charm, sometimes it would be gone for a few weeks. There is one sterling charm in there amongst the gold from when we went to Arizona to visit my aunt. One of Oral Roberts University from when we went to visit my brother in Tulsa. An anchor for my dad - being in the Navy. So many more memories. Mom gave this to me a couple of years ago along with her first wedding ring. I cherish them both so much - and never wear them. I am afraid of loosing them.

This bracelet was inspired by my mom's charm bracelet. There is a hodgepodge of dangles, some with rhyme, some with reason only the wearer will know.

Retail Therapy

It seems like I am always at the store. On my lunch, after work, weekends...why can't I get myself on a schedule and get shit done?!?!

So, yesterday, I was at the store, of course on my lunch (I would much rather go on my lunch than after work) and while I was there, I just happened to wander thru the craft department.

*smacks forehead*

Why oh why? What did I buy?

I couldn't help myself. I don't scrapbook, but I had to have these things. I have a ton of ideas that I could do with these as I do with every scrap of everything that I save, it is just getting around to doing them.

Maybe I should change my diary name to confessions of a hoarder.

Oh, and just to add salt to the wound - on groupon, I bought a $100 scrapbooking kit for $25 from Webster's Pages - I thought it would be a good gift......

Steppin outside the box

It all started with a comment of compassion from a friend of mine on Facebook -

and snowballed into

One person reaching out to help one person turned into a rally to help a community. It cost us a few moments of our time, some effort to organize, and when we pick up and deliver - a few gallons of gas - over all it will cost me $4.00 to help a community stay warmer this winter than they would have.

Step outside of your cozy box, and think 'What can I do for my community?'

Is Cooking Weather!!!

We really had a cold snap this weekend and it has put me in the fall comfort food cooking mood. There is something about a hearty bowl of stew or chili or chicken and dumplins that makes the early evenings more welcome.

What is it about a simmering crockpot full of goodness filling the house with those delicious aromas that sets you at ease?

Here is a quick and easy recipe to start out your fall cooking line up.

Chicken Salsa

Set crock pot to low (cook about 8 hours)

3 chicken breasts raw and cubed
1 large jar of your favorite salsa
1 can of black beans
1 can of corn
1 small can green chilies
1 tsp cumin
3 Tbl chili powder
Throw it all in together - don't worry bout draining the liquids - give it a good stir, cover and walk away

what you can add - onions, garlic, chick peas

I serve it over a handful of tortilla chips, lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese and then top with a dollup of sour cream

So whilst cleaning and organizing my work room, it became clear to me I had a hording problem.
Chain.

Chain everywhere, spools of it, cards wrapped with it, baggies full of it. Way too much chain. I bought it for a reason, why haven't I been using it?

So I am going to make something with chain, lots of chain :)

I bought this aluminum chain online, was a good deal, didn't pay much attention to the size of the links - it is huge - I had no idea what to do with it, until now ;)

Jade and stone wear beads with swarovski accents. I think it needs more chain..

Jo fell in love with this one, and now she owns it. It is silver tone, brass, copper, plated you name it, all gobbed up in one glorious mess.

Fun Find and Fun at a Reception

I went home for a wedding a few weeks ago, and while my daughter was at work, I busied myself by going for a walk around her neighborhood. Got my hair cut, went to a couple thrift stores, and across the street, in the shopping plaza I spied a Fashion Bug! I haven't been to Fashion Bug in years. It was the place to go back in the 80's in the midwest for the hip trendy clothes. I need to stop in.

So I did!

They were having a great sale, and I indulged myself with some new clothes, and I found this on the way to the register. 40% off of sale price, I got it for $4!! Cute porcelain beads, 18" long - this is by far the find of the year :) Can't wait to make something of it.

The wedding was fun, got to see family and friends I haven't seen in years (some 30 years). It was a nice way to bring us all together. I have a few candid shots of us at the reception, will share with you. These make me smile, and some make me laff out loud :)

Would you ever consider....

I haven't had two seconds to myself today, and have had this idea rolling around in my noggin all day.

Would you ever consider hiring someone to help you with marketing your product. Like a real firm. Have you ever? Is it really that much different from what you can do on your own?

I want to take that next step, but I honestly don't know if I am ready in terms of time. I still have my 40 that I have to commit to. So I struggle with spending all my free time reading and researching and finding that right niche for my jewelry. If I hired someone to help me, that would free up time to make more jewelry - see - catch 22

I love them so much. I did have a hard time deciding what to do with them, because they were just too cute to look at in a pile :)

I couldn't separate them, they were just so happy together, so I incorporated the most of them into this multi-strand necklace!

I used a t-shirt that was tie tyed by my friend Todd and created this! This is a FUN colorful design that I will post a tutorial on soon!

Fall Cluster Necklace - Subtle Changes

One simple change can make such a drastic change to a design.

Here is how it started. I faux lariat with a golden fall colored cluster.
Closed in the back with a simple clasp
It just didn't do it for me.

I removed the clasp from the back, added a decorative toggle to the front, added the dangles to the toggle.

From simple style to simply fabulous!

My brother has been a pillar of inspiration, support, encouragement, love... and the list goes on. Some of my earliest memories are of him, bringing me sketch pads and pencils and sitting with me and drawing. He always praised me for my attempts, and found merit to my work. I have always been amazed at how he 'sees' the world. How everything has a potential for beauty or to stimulate imagination.

Award after award, honor after honor has been bestowed upon him for his work, and it is easy to see why.

His talent goes beyond, 'having a flare' - He is art.

Yup I am at that point.

What had happened was -

I was asked to make earrings for an upcoming wedding. I had to order the requested components, and thought to myself - "Self, see what else you need and just git 'er done" - So I did.

I added to the order some ear wires - wow silver has gotten expensive - I added bezel cups for more resin works - I added some chain - all the things I 'thought' I needed. While I was at it - I went to Vista Prints and ordered more business cards.

Order done, housework time. I started at my computer desk. Too many things piling up. Got it organized. (found a few business cards so I am not totally out) Feeling froggy - I moved into my studio. With my hands on my hips, I turned a circle in the room, surveyed the carnage, blinked back a few tears and set to work. I had found some stackable baskets that would be perfect for sorting, put them out on the work bend and got to sortin'.

Lo and behold - I found my strapless bra - hrm....
I found a moldy coffee cup - stashed under the shelf
I found my book I have been searching for (wanting to know how it ends)
I found a half a box of business cards....
I FOUND A PACKAGE OF EAR WIRES!!!!

I am furious with myself.

So my dearest darlings I have staged an intervention for myself with the help of my room mate. We are going in guns a'blazing and not stopping until it is done. Until this feat is completed, I will be on radio silence.

Must keep my head on straight.

Selling on ArtFire -

I am torn.

In there past there has been a lot of quabbling over selling hand made - selling supplies - and selling commercial items 'as handmade' on ArtFire. (the latter is just plain hair-ass-ee)

I try to buy supplies from Art Fire - supporting the local small business person when I can. I have supplies to sell as well. After reading a lot of the back and forth on the community board about 'artists' vs. 'suppliers' I pulled mine down.

I pulled them thinking, I don't need to be selling supplies with my art. Let my art be distinct and the showcase of that account - I need to have a separate account for the supplies.

Now I have all of these supplies (inherited them when I bought a healing crystal/tumbled stone bizness) and where am I going to sell them?

What would you do?

Would you go ahead and add them to your ArtFire page and sell them along with your art?
Would you create a separate account to sell supplies on?

A while back some of you may remember I tried to start up a Share you Wares concept from my blog. It didn't take off like I had hoped, well, it didn't at all - but ...

On Facebook there is a great group I have joined - This and That Destash.

It is a group of hording crafters just like myself (and you - you know who you are), who are trying to do just that - de stash some of their items.

In the group you will find pictures of items people are trying to sell, or trade for other items, along with posts for people who may be needing items that you may just have!

Remember these kickin' polymer clay pendants I got from my friend Davinia of Back Pocket Designs?

I got some inspiration from the heat we have been having lately to work up this design.

It has been so hot lately and the stamping on the focal looks like fire. Paired it up with the faceted red glass, and this baby sizzles!!!

Blue dyed matte finish agate beads for the cool cool pool that my friends invite me to use, the tiny swarovski crystals for the drops of dew in the morning, the green stone wear bead for the grass that is still growing despite the heat and the lack of rain, and the white stone ware bead for my legs - that never see the sun and are clear :)

I made a set last night for a silent auction to benefit the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation.

From their Facebook page -

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma is a very rare cancer typically originating in the head and neck region. This malignancy has a slow - and sometimes relentless - progression with a tendency to grow along nerves. Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma is usually is found in the head and neck areas of the body. Being rare, there are very few treatment options available.

In 2005 Marnie Kaufman, an ACC survivor, founded the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation to help raise money for Research in this disease. The ACCRF is affiliated with several universities and hospitals throughout the United States. Since it's founding in 2005, the foundation has raised over 2 million dollars through grassroots fundraising. With the help of this funding there are clinical trials going on now for Chemotherapy Treatments. We hope these trials will help ACC patients live longer, healthier lives.

In 2009, Kim Schmidlin started the ACCRF-NC Chapter in honor of her sister Kellie Godwin Hinshaw, a 2001 & 2007 ACC SURVIVOR. The 1st Annual ACCRF 5k Run and 1 Mile Fun Run raised over $20,000 and had 177 registered runners. The 2010 event proved to be even more successful, which raised over $34,000 for the cause and had over 377 registered runners. The 2nd Annual ACCRF run also brought 10 ACC Survivors together from all across the United States.

The North Carolina ACCRF is hosting the 3rd Event on August 27, 2011. This is a family Friendly event! Please make plans to bring your family out and come and Run or Walk in this special event.

**The Race Will be held August 27, 2011 at Campbell University.

The colors for the foundation are burgundy and ivory. I chose these dyed matte finished agate, with vintage lucite accents. Agate seemed to be a good fit for the piece because it is noted in the metaphysical world to be a good protective energy stone, especially for children, and very calming and soothing. It is also said to help strengthen the body's connection to the earth. It is reported to mystically give courage, energy, strength, and dispels fears, all of which increase self-confidence. It is said to lessen feelings of envy by grounding the emotions. Agate is also used in crystal emotional healing for resolving bitterness and resentments. It is also called and believed to be a stone of harmony. These two factors makes it a stone that's said to help improve and harmonize relationships. Also, by bringing the elements of one's being into harmony it greatly enhances healing.

This has me thinking about doing something out side the box of how I have set up my business. I don't duplicate, I want everyone to have their own piece of art. Re thinking some of it, I am going to create a few designs that will be dedicated to an 'Awareness' section of my site. These designs will vary in color - to reflect the awareness color that is associated with that cause. All of the items that are sold in the awareness category, 50% of the proceeds will go to that charity for more research.

Came home Monday nite to a package in the post -

My friend Jenny from Sweden sent me a surprise! Tea called "Mums Bum" in reply to a blog post a bout my about my butt falling :) and some chocolate wafers!!!! The poor wafers couldn't handle the heat and had melted. They are in the freezer at the moment waiting for my tummy!
She included one of her own tea strainers, in case I didn't have one - so sweet!!! (I didn't have one - now I do!)

That tea is MARVELOUS!

The internet is a wonderful thing! I have good friends all over the world. Some I will never meet face to face, but I that isn't a requirement any more to kindle lasting friendships.

Lazy Sunday On Lake Ontario

It was very hard to get moving this morning. Just wanted to stay by the lake.

I can't pass up the rocks in the lake. The lake is really active this morning, so it was hard to get a good picture of the rocky shore under my feet.

I have a bucket and am collecting some nice stones to take home with me. This will prolly be one of the last times we get to stay up here at the lake house. Mic is selling it :( I don't blame him. It is a lot of up keep and so far away from everything, way out here - it just isn't safe.

New York Blues - More Vacation

This 'set' ended up happening while making a bunch of separates :)

I kept working with the same handful until they were all gone and came up with all of these! The strung necklace is the perfect length to wear with the chain necklace as a great compliment. I did make a pair of earrings but forgot to take the picture :)

These stones are such a sweet and gentle combination. Blue is a peaceful color in itself and these stones are a testament to that.

Lapis brings truthfulness, openness, and creativity. It can help organize daily life as well as organizing and quieting a busy or restless mind. Lapis also helps build self-confidence, and is a stone traditionally for royalty. Lapis bring spiritual love and is also known for enhancing love and fidelity within marriage.

More Vacation!

Yesterday was so relaxing. We sat around the table and told stories thru the day - some true, most not :)

I took advantage of some quiet time while the men folk were napping and busted out the contents of the Mondo Delux Busy Bag and made some jewelry.

It was overwhelming at first - everything is so hodgepodge - then I just took a breath, and reached in and grabbed a few things, and made myself work with them.

LOVED IT!

This is a multi layer necklace of fresh water pearl, dyed agate and swarovski crystals.

I have a few more of the angel wing pearls left, hopefully enuff for a bracelet and earrings.

Last nite we went to visit James brother. Jon took us to his friends farm and we rode her horses.

James on Pooh Bear the quarter horse, receiving his instruction. He was a sweet baby

Me out bouncing around on Eastman the Thoroughbred. He was hard headed and didn't want to do anything. We had a quiet Jesus come to meetin in the back 40 and he straightened right out - May have been I mentioned the Alpo plant........

We bounced around for an hour, walked em out, and put 'em to bed. Then off in our stinky sweaty clothes to dinner.

I kept smelling my hands - nothing smells better than horse sweat :)

Vacation!!!!!

Vacation for us is going home to visit family. Illinois for my folks and New York for James'. Wouldn't trade these trips home for any island get away or mountain ron-day-vu.

This is the house I want to call home. Smack dab on the shore line of Lake Ontario. This is a view from the back deck.

This 'Lake' (seems like a small sea to me) takes my breath away. It is so vast. When there is a good breeze, which is 95% of the time out here, the lake actually breaks on the shore like the ocean. Amazing.

From the kitchen table you can sit by the back door and listen to the waves. My favorite spot in the house. We could and do sit here for hours over a beverage and laff and talk for hours. Could completely waste a day right here.

I brought my 'Mondo Delux' busy bag with me for this week, because I didn't know what to bring and panicked :)

I have four trays of seed beads, crystals, findings - already sorted, wire, beading wire, bracelet blanks (hammer at home, cuz I didnt' want to bring my anvil), tools, roll of chain, and a couple tupperware containers with random handfuls of beads. It is going to be fun:)

Today has started off wonderful, a walk with the dog, a wander with the camera, and a stroll down memory lane. Comet may have the right idea, lets take a nap and then see what the rest of the day brings :)
May as well - here it is 11:30 and I am still in my pajamas!!!!

Cool Finds At The FleaMarket

Went to the flea market while Jo was in town. Is always fun to run around looking at treasures and trash.

This booth blew my mind. His work was amazing. I couldn't pass these up.

The pendant is an Irish 1/2 crown and the earrings are South African pennies.

I don't know if it against the law to 'deface' money like this, and I hope it isn't, because I love these so much!!!

Purpose Pendant - Amber

I got a custom order for a purpose pendant, needing a meaning of good health, balance and after talking to her a bit, needing to overcome some fears. The customer gave me free creative rein over the project, saying "I trust your judgement"

These are the hardest custom orders. I always wonder in the back of my mind if they will like it.

Here is what I did:

I chose amber as the focal stone due to its healing properties.
Amber, according to mystical lore is beneficial for purifying the body, and general healing purposes. It is reputed to cleanse its environment by drawing out negativity, and to relieve physical pain the same way. It is used mystically to bring the energies of patience, protection, psychic shielding, romantic love, sensuality, purification, balance, healing and calmness to those who wear or carry it. It is considered a good luck charm for marriage.

Calcite increases and amplifies energy. All calcites are helpful in lessening of fear and reducing stress. Calcite is a protecting, purifying, grounding and centering stone, and can help bring inner peace. Calcite is also a stone of spirituality, wisdom and reconciliation.

Citrine is known as a "success" stone because it is said in folklore to promote success and abundance, especially in business and commerce. Its lore also says that it enhances mental clarity, confidence, happiness and will power. Citrine is purported to bring good fortune, sometimes in very unexpected ways. Citrine is also a good general protection stone according to crystal healing lore. It is said to alleviate depression and self-doubt, and diminish irrational mood swings due to the effect of mental clarity it has.

Sunstone is a powerful stone for dispelling fears and phobias of all kinds. In addition to dispelling fears and phobias, sunstone also decreases stress and lifts depression. Sunstone also brings good luck and abundance. This stone increases personal power and will, as well as life force energy.

Pearls attune the wearer to ebb and flow of life. They are calming and centering. They give purity and promote faith, charity, and integrity, truth and loyalty. They especially enhance personal integrity.

Then added the color blue for peace.

It makes for a stunning combination - the warmth of the yellows and the 'pop' of the blue. I would compliment most any outfit, and serves a purpose at the same time!

While Leigh was home for a visit - we had fun sitting around the table crafting. She has some mad skills at putting a design together. She pushed the beads around the table for a bit, til she got it just the way she wanted it, then told me - "Make this for me Mom"

So I did :)

In return, she made me these earrings :)

I made some bails for Davinia of BackPocket Designs and in return she sent me the awesome polymer pieces!!! I can't wait to work with them.

I love the 'abstract' designs on these pieces. Is like each one can tell its own story.

Anyone a fan of Anne McCaffery "Dragon Riders" series? The bottom large round one reminds me of a landscape or the horizon in one of her tales.

Summer clovers in resin

Over the weekend I sucked it up, mixed up a mess of resin, and poured another bezel cup using a clover given to me by a friend who wanted them set in resin.

I was nervous as all get out because the last one I tried turned out milky, for a lack of better words.

This time - PERFECT!! It was like it was set behind glass. This go around, I set it up under a can light and let it 'bake' that may be the key for me and resin.

Leigh was home and had a blast taking pictures with the light box.

Workin on a custom piece

Ever seen these? The wire wrapped trees with natural stone? A friend of mine had one and stones had started to fall off - "Wonder if Tish can do anything with this?!?!"

Popped all the stones off, and have this great pile of jasper.

Poor little wire tree - wonder if I can do anything with this.

She also gave me this beautiful piece of carnelian (her grandfather cut and polished it) and a piece of tiger eye. She wants a necklace with the carnelian as the focal with the jasper pieces from the tree.

For the design, I paired up the jasper with tiger eye, lapis, bronzite, kyanite and rose quartz.

It is started - how will it turn out?

Yesterday before work - I stopped by the Rings & Things Bead Show in Durham.

So much goodness - I can't begin to tell you. I do a good amount of my shopping online, but what a treat to be able to see it all up close and in person

I love the bowls of candy placed strategically throughout the show - helps keep your stamina up while shopping!

Laurae checked me out - what a sweetie. I asked if I could take her picture and she said 'sure' then added 'just don't take a picture of me' I laft - and she was awesome enuff to play along!

Ok - so - 125 shots later - I got these.

My good friend Davinia has been kind enuff to be supporting me via emails with suggestions and helping me trouble shoot why in tarnation I can't shoot a decent image.

Seems there are tons of settings on my camera, it isn't the point and shoot I thought it was. James pushed me out of the chair, brought up the menu and changed a bunch of the settings. How did he know how to do this? Hrm.....I have a manual somewhere............

This is a fun summer sizzler. Vintage button, painted aluminum chain, vintage crystal, faceted glass and that wonder focal made by Davinia of Back Pocket designs.

Still not perfect but so much more better than what it was.

Kicking and Screaming - Bad Photo Day

Found some time this morning for me - *queue Mormon Tabernacle Choir* so I took advantage of it and made some new things.
Once again I struggled with the pictures...

How can I use a flash and they come out so dark???

I hunkered down and learned abit more about manipulating the color with Gimp

God it felt good to sit at my workbench again! I have been wanting to work with these pendants for some time. I got them from my good friend Davinia of Back Pocket Designs. I love her work so much. My daughter has claimed the first one :)

My friend asked me about fixing her bracelet.
This is her favorite bracelet, and even with the missing stone still wears it :)
I looked at the wrap, simple enuff - the size of the stone, easy enuff -

Sure - I can fix it:)

I dug thru most of my stone supplies looking for a good fit for the bracelet. I have some smallish garnets, but the color was just wrong. Then I found some random chip stones. Yes, there is a hole drilled in it, but it was perfect!

I bent the wires slightly to put the chip in place, and formed the wires back around the chip, and WA-LA!!! Can you tell which one was added?

I had more chips and made a pair of earrings to go with the bracelet. I wrapped the end of the wire around the chip grouping to give it a wire wrapped feel, like the bracelet.

I stopped into Michaels on the way to work to pick up some gold wire for a last minute custom order and I ran into my old friend Clearance. :)

Much to my surprise good old Clearance had his cousin along 30% off. Boy we had a grand old time.

All of this for under $28!! (taken with my cell phone at work)

This chain is so cool. This was the only one they had in yellow - there was a gray one as well - I scooped them both up. Is painted aluminum chain. I wish there was more, I would have bought them all!

And a new pair of flip flops for myself.

Celebrating 'Get Organized Month' With A Giveaway! - Closed

It's not that I am not motivated - I am - really.
What I am not is organized.

Because I am not organized, I am making more work for myself. I bought storage tubs, and shelving - but I didn't organize my tubs. I just put things in the tubs, to get stuff off my work area, and clear my computer desk. When I want to start project, I have to dig thru tubs trying to find what components I want to use and get everything collected.

Now a lot of my problem is - I don't throw anything away. Everything can be used to create something..... right - scraps of colored paper, rubber bands, memory chips, washers, fishing lures, it all gets collected, and tubbed. (This is a complete contradiction for the rest of my house - I throw everything away)(strange bird I am)

Artist Introduction - One Way To Do It

There are many ways to get your creations out there. Pounding the streets with business cards is one way - and can be scary for some. Joining business societies is another. One approach I have used, is doing google searches for local galleries, consignment shops, co ops in the area and emailing them an introduction letter. Do your research - go to their site, and look at the items they have posted. Make a comment about those items that you love in the introduction. Tell something about yourself, about your work, about your goals, awards, publications, other stores you are in and show examples of your work.

Here is an example of the letter I sent out, it has got me in two stores in the area -

I have visited the site for your store and the items you have listed are wonderful! The peculiar pets are a scream! I would love to have the opportunity to bring my pieces by to be considered for display/sale in your store.

Please let me introduce myself. My name is Tish McDermott and I am a local jewelry artist. I have had the wonderful opportunity to have been shown , at The Arts Council of Farmville, NC in March 2009 and also the Arts Council of Holly Springs, NC in April, 2009.

New Additions to the Just A Tish Inventory

I have added tumbled stones, crystals and other stone formations to my festival line up. It is fun to have a natural specimen of the stones that are in my jewelry. Gives a different perspective to what actually is in the jewelry that I make.

These bookends are huge geodes, that are sliced and dyed. The outter ring is agate, and the inner is quartz. I love how the dye shows the layers and the designs of the stone.

Did you know:
Agate is noted in to be a good protective energy stone, especially for children, and very calming and soothing. It is reported to give courage, energy, strength, and dispels fears, all of which increase self-confidence. It is said to lessen feelings of envy by grounding the emotions. Agate is also for resolving bitterness and resentments. It is also called and believed to be a stone of harmony.Quartz is a power stone that harmonizes and balances. It enhances energy and thoughts, and purifies the spiritual, mental, and physical. It is also a powerfully protective stone, bringing the purified energy in.

I love these salt lamps!!! They are natural formations, attached to a base, with a hole drilled into the bottom that will house a small bulb attached to an electrical cord that you can plug in and enjoy it's soft glow.

There are great benefits to a salt lamp.

Did you know:

Negative ions have long been considered healthy; the sea air, mountain air and the air around swiftly running water is high in negative ions. Indoor air, recirculated air, and air around electronic equipment is very low in negative ions. Many office workers who suffer health complaints around fluorescent lighting and computer monitors report considerably less fatigue and headaches if the concentration of negative ions in the air is increased. Why negative ions may be beneficial is only partially understood.

It has been shown that negative ions in the air bind with airborne pollutants, making them heavier so that they fall to the ground, and therefore are unavailable to be inhaled. Many modern air purifiers - the so-called 'ionic air cleaners - use this technique to provide cleaner indoor air for allergy sufferers. Some studies seem to indicate that an increase in negative ions in the air increases bloodflow to the brain, which would have the effect of improved concentration. The salt lamp is an attractive alternative to the utilitarian look of an air purifier.

The amount of negative ions a salt lamp can release depends on its size and how warm the candle or lightbulb can make it. The larger the crystal, obviously, the more expensive the lamp, but the larger area it can provide with negative ions. Salt lamps that produce 'night-light' amounts of light can provide ions to an area equal to the average office cubicle.

5 Things you should do everytime you have a special or post a new item - from Marketing Handmade

Everyone loves a special deal, offer, sale or discounted item. Who doesn’t love to be the first to know about a new and fresh item, so they can be the first to have it before everyone else gets it? I know I love to be among the first to know something!

Every time you have a sale, discount an item or list a new item you should:

Tell your newsletter subscribers
Newsletter subscribers are your most loyal fans and you have gained their trust. So always make sure to alert them 1st. Make sure your newsletter includes a way for them to share with friends. If you use a email service like iContact.com: that is really easy to do.

Tweet about it
Tell your Twitter followers. Depending on how great the special or item they your loyal followers may retweet it to all of their loyal followers.

Post about it on Facebook
Always keep your Facebook fans updated with the newest information about your handmade items, sales and discounts. Make sure to include a nice pretty picture when you post, because everyone knows that a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Blog about it
Make sure to include a picture to represent the special discount or item(s) and just enough detail to get them to click through to your shop. If you give all the information in your blog post then people may not fell the need to click through to your shop.

If you don’t have a craft blog, then you are missing out on free organic traffic. Having a blog that you post to at least two times a week is a great way to get organic traffic from search engines. Each time you post, make sure to include one or two keywords that you think your shoppers will use to find your handmade online.

Create a special banner ad
To increase your chances of getting sales, create an update your advertising banners. Make sure to include words like “Sale”, “Special Offer”, “Discount” “Free” or “New”.

Place as many advertising banners on relating sites as you can.

ProjectWonderful.com is an excellent tool for getting craft banners placed quickly on sites with high traffic.

ArtBeads ‘What’s Old is New Again!’ Blogger Challenge

Hey I forgot to show you the other pieces I made with the new beads from ArtBeads.com and my mom's old necklace!

I am slippin' here :)

If you remember back to this post you can see how I got started. (I do so love those earrings!)

Well I didn't stop there!

Not only did I add the bead from my mom's necklace, but I added a few links from an old chain necklace as well and created this bracelet. I added the cute daisy earring drop as an accent. This one is so bright, and so flirty!

Here I did a double strand. I made hammered copper spirals to use as the links to attach the strands to. One of hand wound links on copper, used cone end caps, from ArtBeads.com to accent one of the lamp work beads, it really set it off, and then strung the blue glass with the crystals and seed bead accents. This is a fun mismatch aye-sim-met-rickle design on copper chain.

Little something for Mama :)

While at the gem show, I had a few items on a custom order list that I had to look for, so you know I had to do a quick run thru of the beads, just to see what was out there. While on the hunt for the custom order pieces, I ran across these......

I couldn't pass them up!!!

I love the faceted citrine, the multi color resin beads, and the beautiful faceted rutilated quartz. There was so much more I wanted to get, but I did practice restraint - for the first time in my life.

I wish I would have taken my camera, there is so much I would love to have shared with you, but then again, all of the pictures would have come out blurry and it would only have been frustrating.

If you went to a bead show, what would you not be able to pass up?

Geode Crackers!

James and I went to the GL&W gemshow in Franklin yesterday and had a blast. Too much to see and so much to buy :) I went to ad inventory for my stone/gem business and also to take advantage of the beadshow as well :)

I can't believe how much the prices have gone up. I went about 3 years ago, and silver was .65/gram - now - $1.45/gram - WOW!! But I still got some great deals.

The 'find' of the day were these trancas geodes from Mexico. I got them from El Paso Rock Shop.
I wanted to get the whole bag (150 lbs) but I had to stop myself. James is not good to take along to these shows, he says - Buy it all! Did you know the word geode comes from the Greek word, earthlink? Did you know that geodes are lava bubbles? (Sorry bout the crappy picture, squint it may come into focus)

James has made his choice!

Safety glasses were worn :) Another way to do this, is put the geode in a sock, then hit it.

Allies broke right open. Quartz and some silica dust.

Here second one was beautiful! The fun thing about these, is they glow under a black light :)

James' was nearly solid, so it was a bit tuffer to break open. It is BEAUTIFUL! I am trying to find out what the pink layer is. James sez, it is petrified bubble gum.............

I am doing the Maker Faire in June, and can't wait to show off these geodes. James is building me a plexi glass box, so the kids can break them open and see what is inside and be safe. Gonna see how they slice as well, the 'shell' on these are a bit brittle, so they may just crumble, but still sometimes you just have to know!

I'll show more of my new 'goodies' later in the week! Have a great one!

I got a great selection of fun items from ArtBeads for their 'What's Old is New Again' challenge. I got the new beads from Artbeads and am using an blue glass necklace of my mom's as the old.

I found these earrings that I had picked up last year when I was in St. Louis visiting my daughter from a thrift store and added them to the mix last minute.

I was really aprehensive about popping that necklace apart, but I finally did it! Here is the 'mess' of inspiration!

Let me tell you how much fun I had with this challenge. All of these colors are so bright and cheery, I didn't want to stop this morning!

Are these adorable or what!!!!! I can't help but smile when I see them.

Fun and bright, simply knotted hemp necklace. This is casual, but with an attitude :) It flirts with a tshirt and says "I dare you" with a plunged neck sundress - can you wear it?

and to complete the perfect summer ensemble, a bold and chunky bracelet.

I am not done!! I have more coming tomorrow!

Have lost my umph

What do you do when you are loosing creative ground?
When there is not enuff time in the day to get everything done?

My blog is the first to suffer at these times. I have the 'I'll get around to it' mentality, and never do find the time.

I try to be a daily poster - in fact - a lot of times, I will write my blog posts for the week all in one day. Makes it easier, and I have the rest of the week to do what I need to do.

Lately - I can't find anything to write about, no new news, no new projects, no new ideas. Frankly kids, I am spent.

Now because I am a daily poster, will my blog suffer if I drop back to posting 2x a week? They say consistency is the key to blogging. So if I drop back to 2x a week, say, Tues and Fridays will I still be satisfying my followers?

Have you run into this? Have you ever run out of steam? What do you do to get back on track?

I can't take pictures - and most of you know this, but you stop by here and take a gander anyways.

I spent an hour and a half this morning taking pictures. Almost 200 pictures later - I have about 12 I can use - the most of them come out like this.......

My friend Sam got a light box and has been taking great shots - she has invited me over to play - maybe I can get this right.

My friend Selma is a photographer (and so much more) - she says "just bring it over, I'll shoot it"

If you would like to submit your work to this publication, please e-mail a photograph, the name or title of your piece, and contact information to: beadsubmit@northridgepublishing.com.

If submitting multiple pieces, please send a separate e-mail and photograph for each design.

Deadline for the October 2011 issue is 11:59 p.m. MDT, April 25th, 2011. All ideas should be your original work and not previously published.

We will review all submissions, and if selected, we will contact you by May 1st with additional information. All pieces will need to be shipped to us directly for photography and arrive in our office by May 12th. Your creation will be returned to you insured, after the issue has been printed.

Got in late last nite from my trip to Illinois - and am flat out.
Have to take some time off to re group, a little emotional, don't get to see my daughter enuff.
Gimme a couple of days to unpack and get settled in.

I can't help myself -this was just too much fun.

My brother and I spent an afternoon putting each other in hairdos and laft till we cried.

Not making fun of the site, and what they offer - because it is a good idea, taken as it is intended. We took it a step further, and used silly pictures of ourselves and put ourselves in outrageous hair :)

Back Pocket Designs - Pendants

I have this wonderful friend - who is an AMAZING artist - Davinia of Back Pocket Designs. I am a complete and absolute junkie for her work. Not only can you buy her beautiful creations, but she is now sharing her polymer pendants on her store as well!!!!

Look what I bought!!!! She posted the blue flower pendants and the large spotted one on her blog and I just had to have them. I can't wait to work with them. Then just to sweeten the pot - she added a couple more as a big surprise!

While I am on her shop - I can't help myself - I have to buy this necklace I have been ooogling over for ever! Seriously - can you blame me???

Being the dear she is, she snuck in this wildly adorable pin - Mort is so cute :) He has found a home amongst the pins and buttons on my jean jacket :)
